To address the competency gap, the Ministry of Health (MOH) has developed an internship program for doctors graduating from medical schools who are paired with a senior general practitioner to serve as a mentor and supervisor for one year at the hospital of their deployment to enable them acquire skills and competence related to obstetrical practices. Other medical professionals (midwives/nurses and anesthetists) are deployed to hospitals without any pre-deployment training in obstetrical practices. To strengthen the internship program for general practitioners and improve the competencies of midwives and nurses before deployment to hospitals, MSSFPO intends to support the development and operationalization of a pre-deployment course on practical obstetric skills. The course content will clearly outline benchmarks and competency levels expected of new graduates to perform safely obstetrical procedures before they can be allowed to manage patients on their own.
